L.U.P.O.
L.U.P.O. Lorenzelli Projects is pleased to present New Body, a duo showcase featuring Turinbased artist Giuseppe Mulas and Seoul-based artist Seongjin Jeong, at the 2024 edition of Miami’s Untitled Art Fair. This marks the Milanese gallery’s debut at the fair, where it will be part of the Nest section, dedicated to emerging galleries and artists. With a curatorial focus on fostering new artistic dialogues between East and West, the Nest’s theme aims to bridge cultural and geographical divides, celebrating the dynamic exchange of diverse voices in contemporary art. Mulas and Jeong’s works embody this spirit of cross-cultural exchange and artistic exploration, offering a compelling dialogue on the integration of diverse cultural narratives. Through distinct yet complementary languages, both artists examine the rich layers of human experience, exploring how histories, myths, and contemporary realities intersect.
Giuseppe Mulas: the symbolism of the exotic
and the everyday
Giuseppe Mulas’ works guide viewers on a layered journey, where symbols and meanings unfold gradually. Inspired by his time with an indigenous community in the Amazon rainforest, Mulas explores a world where nature transcends boundaries, revealing its primordial, untamed power. The female body emerges as a metaphor for desire, intertwined with natural symbols to express a yearning for connection—a romantic journey toward others and oneself.
Through vivid colors and evocative forms, Mulas crafts a visual language that invites exploration of the many facets of human existence. Personal experience is transformed into a collective narrative, where desire, nature, and identity merge in a universal and profound dialogue.
Seong Jin Jeong: merging myth and modernity
In contrast, Seong Jin Jeong delves into the fluid boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds in contemporary art. His six modular head sculptures—crafted from FRP, epoxy, polystyrene, digital prints, and steel—draw inspiration from his previous works, merging elements of classical European art history with Asian mythology. These pieces constantly reconfigure, creating new combinations that reflect the dynamic nature of contemporary life while exploring temporality and cultural exchange in today’s technology-driven society.
Representing figures such as the artist himself, Shiva, Hephaestus, the Laocoön group, Frankenstein, Sun Wukong, the Four Heavenly Kings, and Medusa, the works weave together mythological, historical, and personal narratives. Jeong’s approach invites a fresh interpretation. A distinctive aspect of the project “S’areste” is its conof these figures, transcending their cultural origins to highlight the interconnectedness of global histories and modern experiences.
A dynamic cultural exchange
Together, the works of Mulas and Jeong form a dynamic narrative that bridges the gap between Eastern and Western traditions. Mulas’ vibrant depictions of nature’s exotic elements contrast with Jeong’s technologically influenced reconceptualization of myth. Both artists provide a unique reflection on the multiplicity of human experience, while encouraging a deeper dialogue on integration, diversity, and the ever-changing dimensions of our collective identity.
